FILM REVIEWS - A REGULAR FEATURE

As most of you know Grandad has become a real film buff now his golf playing days are over. He will give an opinion on the films he has seen over the past week . He and Nanna saw Seven Pounds - verdict excellent. Then Grandad saw Milk which has 4 BAFTA and 8 Oscar nominations. Its about a gay rights activist called Harvey Milk. Again a very good film. Today he has seen Frost/Nixon again nominated for 6 BAFTAs and 5 Oscars. Once again a very good film.

ON THE BEACH IN JANUARY

Two new pictures of me taken on Fraisthorpe beach near Bridlington only this afternoon. As you can probably tell the weather was a bit raw. Very cold wind blowing off a rough sea but quite fine.
Nanna was hosting a reading group at our house so Grandad and Dougal disappeared out of the way for a couple of hours up to the beach.
The other picture is part of the old wartime fortifications still standing after 70 years. Must have built it well. There are still quite a lot all the way down the beach.

DICK TURPIN - AGAIN !!

Nanna and Grandad retured to the Theatre Royal in York to see Dick Turpin the Pantomime once again last night. This time they sat in the Upper Circle. Still as good as the first time they said.
We have a bit of disruption at the house this week as builders are making the base for a porch over the back door. This means that I can't jump out straight into the garden which is a bit of a nuisance. Should be finished on Friday hopefully ??
It's Dawn's (thats DK2) 40th birthday today so Many Happy Returns to her.

MORE EXCAVATION WORK

Hello folks, yes its me Dougal here again. As you can see from the picture i've been back digging in the Big Wood this morning. Great fun with earth flying everywhere. Brought a lot back as well. Plenty in the car but then I ended up with my paws in the bath. Don't really like water but then no gain without pain as they say !!

EVITA, CINEWORLD AND MARIE CURIE

Nanna and Grandad went to see Evita in Hull last Monday night. They said it was excellent. Grandad has seen even more films getting full value from his Cineworld unlimited card ! Nanna has done a bit of Marie Curie support today. And i've been confined to tarmac walks because the weather has been so wet and the fields are mud. Dawn was panicking over her part in Star Struck's new production of "Mulan" but she now knows that she has the part of Lin, an Ancestor. She seems happy enough with this.

THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS

Well folks, another week has disappeared very quickly and here we are again. Nanna is still having trouble with her knee so she missed all her dancing last week. Grandad managed three films (four in previous week) finishing with "The Wrestler" last Friday. N & G went to Scarborough on Thursday to see a musical panto called "Awaking Beauty" at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round (see picture). The audience sit around the action which takes place in the middle with a few "props". Awaking Beauty is a bit of a spoof on "Sleeping Beauty" as you'll probably realise. Now what else happened. Well I got my fair share of walks. Went twice up to the "big wood" walk, had a good play with a big black dog called "Scooby", Grandad had a hospital appointment with a orthopeedick (spelling Dougal ?) surgeon - no operation on him needed. N & G had fish and chips before the theatre and finished the week with a curry at Ve Raj in Shiptonthorpe after Nanna had been in York all day meeting her cousin Susan. Hectic times. Grandad had also gone to York to see Great Grandma and also his nephew Philip and family.

DIGGING TO AUSTRALIA

Well hello again everybody, your favourite hound here. Been on a good walk with Grandad this morning. No leads !!! A few whistles but a good walk (a few bangs) and some big digging down rabbit holes. I was described at one stage as a JCB in full flow !! I'm sure I saw a rabbit and promptly disappeared - finally being found at the other side of an adjacent field ! Good fun.

HOWLING DOG

The other night I had to be woken from a dream because (according to Grandad) I started howling. Haven't done it before. No full moon. Very strange but I went straight back to sleep and back to dream. Can't remember what I was dreaming about though !!

NICKNAMES

As we all settle down after all the Xmas and New Year festivities and I get back to normality it's interesting to note that Grandad has a habit of labelling people with "nicknames" - for instance - Nanna calls him "Jonesey" and in turn she gets called "Mumkins". Dawn is known as DK or "Dawnykins", Auntie Katy is "Yato", Uncle Pand (Andrew) is "Pando" and Uncle Simon is "S". Uncle Simon often refers to Grandad as "Blobby" but Martin and Mikey haven't been labelled !!! Grandad's brother is known as "Elly", and so when it comes to Dougal well i've got used to DOOGS or DOOGIE. Terms of endearment really. Quite nice actually.

CHRISTMAS COMES TO AN END

So again poor old Dougal stays at home while Nanna, Grandad, Uncle Simon, Auntie Karen, Martin, Mikey, Auntie Katy, Paul, Uncle Pando and the two Dawns go out for a farewell Xmas supper of fish and chips at Driffields best restaurant Stewarts. Well most had fish and chips although Martin had a rather "large" plate of scampi chips and beans and Mikey had sausage and chips.

MARTIN AND MIKEY VISIT DOUGAL

Yes Martin and Mikey with Auntie Karen and Uncle Simon are paying Dougal (well and Nanna and Grandad) a flying visit. They really came for the pantomime but have stayed overnight, with the boys having a "sleepover" with Dawn just for a change. Whilst my paws are busily hitting the keys everyone is still in bed including me with the exeption of Nanna and Grandad.
Auntie Katy brought the boys just after 9.00am and they quickly got ready to take me out for my long morning walk, Grandad as well and we did 2 miles back on the path from near Nafferton. In the afternoon I got another trip out with the boys and Dawn this time to look for MORE football cards. They ended up with 6 packets each.

REVIEW OF PANTO

Grandad says that this years pantomime was one of the best ever. Him and Nanna have been going for many years since Uncle Simon, Uncle Pand and Auntie Katy were children. The Dame is Berwick Kaler and he has been doing the show for 30 years. He also writes and directs the panto. Rather than me tell you all about the panto just click on the following link

http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2008/dec/15/theatre-review-dick-turpin-pantomime

It must have been very good because Nanna and Grandad are going back to see it again on 27th January.

FROM THEATRE ROYAL TO "ASK"

After our "gang had finished at the theatre they all went to a big Italian restaurant just a short walk away called ASK.

DICK TURPIN PANTOMIME IN YORK

Well, I suppose it was inevitable. Everyone to the Panto and poor old Dougal left behind !!!! However I did get rescued by Colin so it wasn't so bad. A few hours on my own then picked up by Colin and family until the "gang" re-appeared at 8.15pm.

MARTIN'S LAPTOP

Just as we get to 2009 I remembered something from Xmas. Martin got a new laptop computer but it has a real "snazzy" design and I just wanted to show everybody. Cool eh ??

HAPPY NEW YEAR
